The large 12 inch vase lamps were the first glass lamps to be manufactured by the Aladdin Mantle Lamp Company in the Alexandria, Indiana glass plant. They used the brass oil font from the 1251 and 1252 floor lamps being manufactured at that time. It's interesting that the same vase with identical color combinations was also used to make electric lamps.
The 12 inch vase lamps with their large 18 to 20 inch shades were very expensive lamps for that era, selling for $11.50 without a shade, a price which was considerably more expensive than the model 12 table lamps being sold at the same time. They were, however, a quite colorful addition to an inventory that had consisted only of metal lamps to this point.
The shades that adorned these lamps were quite unique as well offering some very colorful and artistic designs. For all their color and artistry, sadly the cost of these large vase lamps put them out of reach of all but the more affluent people. This fact limited their sales and contributed greatly to making them some of the hardest Aladdin lamps for collectors to find.
